About the Role

We are looking for hands-on and compassionate individuals looking to support children and young people who are unable to access mainstream education and require a personalised approach to learning.

The children and young people we support have a wide range of needs and backgrounds. This may include SEND (Special Educational Needs and Disabilities), SEMH (Social, Emotional and Mental Health needs), complex needs, communication difficulties, trauma backgrounds, and behaviours that can be challenging. Many of the children we work with struggle to regulate their emotions and access learning successfully within mainstream educational settings.

This role focuses on working 1:1 with young people, helping to rebuild their confidence, support their learning, and re-engage them with education. You will play a key role in being a consistent, positive adult who understands their challenges and is committed to helping them succeed.

For some young people, your day may begin by collecting them from home and supporting them to access learning at a learning centre or through educational activities within the local community. For others, support may begin in the family home, where your primary focus will be building trust, developing a positive relationship, and creating a foundation from which learning can take place.

Relationship-building is at the heart of this role. For many children, feeling safe, understood, and valued is the first step towards meaningful engagement and progress.

Key Responsibilities

• Provide 1:1 educational and engagement support to children and young people who are unable to access mainstream education.
• Deliver tailored learning activities based on individual needs, interests, and abilities.
• Build strong, trusting relationships and act as a positive role model.
• Support children to develop confidence, emotional wellbeing, and social skills.
• Collect young people from their home and transport them to a learning centre or approved educational activities where required.
• Deliver learning and enrichment activities within the community when appropriate.
• Support children who experience emotional dysregulation, anxiety, and barriers to learning.
• Use therapeutic and relationship-based approaches to engage children in education.
• Ensure activities outside of learning centres take place in approved and fully risk-assessed environments.
• Record progress, engagement, and learning outcomes.

What is Therapeutic Support?

Our approach is rooted in therapeutic practice, recognising that behaviour is often a form of communication and that many children have experienced challenges that impact their ability to engage with education and relationships.

As an Entry Level Tutor, you will be supported to:

• Build safe, trusting, and consistent relationships.
• Understand the impact of trauma and adverse experiences on learning and behaviour.
• Use empathy and curiosity rather than judgement.
• Create calm, predictable learning environments.
• Focus on strengths, achievements, and positive outcomes.
• Help children develop confidence, resilience, and self-esteem.

Therapeutic support is not about managing behaviour through consequences alone. It is about understanding the reasons behind behaviour and helping children feel safe enough to engage, learn, and succeed.

Supporting Children Who Struggle to Regulate

Many of the children we support find it difficult to regulate their emotions within mainstream settings. This can present in different ways, including:

• Anxiety and school avoidance.
• Frustration and emotional outbursts.
• Low confidence and withdrawal from learning.
• Difficulty managing transitions and change.
• Impulsive or risk-taking behaviours.
• Challenging behaviour that stems from unmet needs.

In this role, you will learn to support children through:

• Building strong and consistent relationships.
• Maintaining calm and predictable boundaries.
• Identifying triggers and early signs of dysregulation.
• Supporting emotional literacy and communication.
• Adapting learning approaches to meet individual needs.
• Celebrating progress and small successes.

Your role is to help children feel safe, supported, and ready to learn in a way that works for them.

Ideal Backgrounds & Experience

Experience working with children or young people with SEND, SEMH needs, complex needs, or challenging behaviour is desirable but not essential. Full training and ongoing support will be provided.

We're looking for someone with a genuine passion for supporting children and young people, who has strong communication and relationship-building skills and can build trust with those they support. The ideal candidate will be patient, empathetic, and resilient, with the ability to remain calm in challenging situations. They should be eager to learn and develop therapeutic approaches, confident working independently, and able to use their initiative when needed. Above all, they will be committed to making a real difference in a young person's life. A full UK driving licence and access to a vehicle are essential, as the role involves transporting young people.
