Job Description:

Framework: AMP8 – United Utilities

About the Role

We are seeking an experienced Section Engineer to support the delivery of major water and wastewater infrastructure projects across the North West.

Reporting to the Senior Site Engineer or Sub-Agent, you will lead engineering activities across an allocated section of works, ensuring projects are delivered safely, accurately and in line with design specifications and programme requirements.

Responsibilities include setting out, engineering control, quality assurance, technical documentation and subcontractor coordination. You will also support junior engineers, resolve technical issues and maintain high standards of safety and quality.

Key Responsibilities

Engineering Delivery

Lead setting out, surveying and dimensional control across allocated works. Interpret drawings and specifications, raise technical queries, oversee as-built surveys and provide technical guidance to junior engineers. Coordinate with Temporary Works teams to ensure requirements are properly managed.

Quality Assurance

Develop and maintain Inspection and Test Plans (ITPs), ensure compliance with specifications and quality procedures, maintain digital records, manage non-conformance reports (NCRs) and coordinate technical solutions with designers. Maintain accurate as-built records and handover documentation.

Health, Safety & Environment

Prepare and review RAMS and Safe Systems of Work, support Permit to Work procedures, identify hazards and implement control measures. Contribute to incident investigations and promote a positive safety culture.

Planning & Progress

Produce short-term programmes covering one to four weeks, support lookahead planning, coordinate subcontractor activities and maintain accurate progress, delay and change records.

Team & Stakeholder Coordination

Work closely with construction, commercial, planning, design, temporary works and SHEQ teams. Coordinate subcontractors, supervisors and client representatives, support planning meetings and ensure technical requirements are clearly communicated.

Digital Engineering

Use digital tools including BIM, AutoCAD and Pix4D for surveying, quality management and reporting. Capture as-built information and identify opportunities to improve productivity, data collection and engineering processes.

About the Candidate

The ideal candidate will have strong setting-out and surveying skills, experience in quality assurance and construction safety, and the ability to manage engineering activities independently. You should be organised, proactive and confident working with multidisciplinary teams and supporting junior engineers.

Essential Criteria

HNC, HND or Degree in Civil Engineering or equivalent, with at least three years' experience as a Site Engineer or Section Engineer on civil engineering or major infrastructure projects. Strong setting-out, surveying and engineering control skills are essential, alongside experience producing method statements, risk assessments and quality documentation.

Candidates must have a good understanding of construction standards, CDM regulations and site safety procedures, hold an appropriate CSCS card and an SMSTS or IOSH qualification, and possess a full UK driving licence.

Desirable Criteria

ICE membership or working towards professional accreditation, a Temporary Works Supervisor (TWS) qualification, experience with Tier 1 contractors or major infrastructure projects, knowledge of BIM and digital assurance systems, and experience within the water industry or another regulated sector.

What’s on Offer?

Competitive salary, hybrid working where project requirements allow, company car or car allowance depending on the role, 25 days' annual leave plus bank holidays with the option to purchase an additional five days, pension contributions, life assurance, health and private medical insurance, and additional employee benefits.

Career Development

An excellent opportunity to contribute to major water and wastewater infrastructure projects across the North West, develop technical expertise and progress your career within civil engineering. The organisation is committed to an inclusive working environment that supports professional development and long-term career progression.
