About this position:
An established automation and engineering business is looking for a Controls Engineer to join their project delivery team in a hybrid role involving regular travel to office and customer sites across the UK. This role would suit someone who enjoys working across the full project lifecycle, from design through to commissioning and customer handover, while collaborating closely with project teams, software engineers, and external partners.
Job Responsibilities:
- Design and develop PLC-based control systems for automated machinery and industrial systems
- Produce PLC and HMI/SCADA software, primarily using Siemens and Rockwell platforms
- Carry out testing, fault finding, commissioning, and on-site support activities
- Support and oversee installation activities on customer sites
- Produce technical documentation including FDS, control philosophies, and supporting project documentation
- Work collaboratively with internal engineering and project teams to deliver projects on time and within budget
- Contribute to the development and standardisation of control system architecture, software, and hardware standards
- Deliver customer training and system handovers following project completion
- Coordinate with suppliers and subcontractors to ensure high-quality project delivery
- Support sales and proposal activities by contributing technical input for controls and automation solutions
- Participate in a 24/7 support rota providing remote and occasional on-site customer support
- Ensure smooth handover of completed projects to customer support teams, including provision of as-built documentation and software backups
- Support continuous improvement initiatives, health & safety compliance, and internal process development
Experience Required:
- Proven experience designing and delivering industrial control systems
- Strong PLC programming experience with Siemens and/or Rockwell platforms
- HMI/SCADA development experience
- Ability to commission, troubleshoot, and fault-find on industrial automation systems
- Experience working directly with customers on-site within industrial or manufacturing environments
- Understanding of project delivery processes and technical documentation creation
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively within multi-disciplinary engineering teams
- Strong communication skills with the ability to support customers and provide technical training
- Full UK driving licence and willingness to travel to customer sites as required
- Previous experience within automation, systems integration, or industrial engineering environments preferred
