The Opportunity
An established engineering and manufacturing business is looking to recruit an experienced Control Engineer to support the design, development and delivery of electrical and control systems for specialist industrial equipment, including projects within the nuclear sector.
Working as part of a multidisciplinary Engineering and Project Delivery team, you will take responsibility for control system design, integration, testing and verification, ensuring systems meet client specifications, relevant industry standards and safety requirements.
The equipment incorporates a variety of electrical and pneumatic control systems, ranging from straightforward relay logic through to more complex PLC-based automation.
Key Responsibilities
Design, develop and verify electrical and pneumatic control systems for specialist industrial equipment.
Ensure control systems comply with client specifications, relevant legislation and industry standards, including CE/UKCA, Machinery, Low Voltage, EMC and ATEX requirements.
Carry out design risk assessments and determine appropriate safety Performance Levels (PL).
Produce electrical and instrumentation drawings, control schematics, single-line diagrams and instrument schedules.
Support the development of Functional Design Specifications (FDS), P&IDs, PFDs and other project engineering documentation.
Specify control system components, instrumentation, electrical panels and associated equipment.
Liaise with suppliers and subcontractors to ensure equipment design, manufacture and testing meet project requirements.
Support the installation, inspection, testing and commissioning of control systems.
Configure and test PLCs, HMIs, variable speed drives (VSDs) and instrumentation.
Identify technical faults, investigate issues and implement corrective actions.
Support Factory Acceptance Testing (FAT), Site Acceptance Testing (SAT) and Installation/Operational Qualification (IQ/OQ).
Provide technical support to installation and commissioning engineers.
Liaise with customers and project stakeholders on technical matters, including occasional UK and overseas site visits.
Experience & Technical Requirements
The successful candidate will ideally demonstrate:
Experience designing electrical and control systems for industrial machinery, process equipment or complex engineering installations.
Knowledge of PLCs, HMIs, industrial automation and programmable control systems.
Experience with AutoCAD 2D, AutoCAD Electrical or EPLAN.
Ability to interpret and produce electrical and pneumatic control drawings.
Experience with control system installation, testing, commissioning and fault-finding.
Understanding of safety-related control systems and Performance Level (PL) assessments.
Knowledge of instrumentation, control circuits, loop checks and variable speed drives.
Understanding of relevant BS EN harmonised standards covering machinery safety, electrical systems and EMC compliance.
Knowledge of BS 7671 (18th Edition Wiring Regulations).
Experience specifying electrical and control equipment for hazardous environments, including ATEX and intrinsically safe circuits.
Ability to review and verify Functional, Hardware and Software Design Specifications.
Good understanding of P&IDs, Functional Design Specifications and General Arrangement drawings.
Desirable Experience
Previous experience working within the nuclear, pharmaceutical, chemical processing or other highly regulated engineering sectors.
Knowledge of containment systems, process equipment or specialist manufacturing machinery.
Experience with GAMP 5 and FDA 21 CFR Part 11 requirements for computerised systems and validation.
Experience working with safety-critical instrumentation and control systems.
Familiarity with Factory and Site Acceptance Testing procedures and commissioning documentation.
The Ideal Candidate
You will be a technically capable Control Engineer who can take ownership of control system design and delivery, from initial specification through to installation, testing and commissioning.
You will be comfortable working alongside mechanical, electrical and project engineering teams, communicating with customers and suppliers, and delivering compliant engineering solutions within demanding project environments.
