Electronic Engineer
Reports to: Technical Director / Principal Electronic Engineer
Location: North East England (NE32)
* £45,000 per annum, depending on experience.
* 25 days holiday
* Fully expensed business travel.
About the Role
This is not a typical maintenance engineering role. This position involves the service, repair, calibration, and commissioning of highly specialised industrial inspection and radiographic systems used across sectors including nuclear, food production, security, research, and heavy industry. The successful candidate will work on advanced equipment and systems that are rarely encountered in conventional engineering roles. We are seeking a technically capable, practical engineer with a strong background in electrical and electronic systems. Role Overview
You will be responsible for diagnosing, repairing, calibrating, and commissioning electrical, electronic, and electromechanical systems both in the workshop and at customer sites throughout the UK.
The role also includes providing technical support to internal departments such as sales and operations, ensuring customers receive appropriate technical solutions and responsive service.
This is a varied, hands-on role offering genuine exposure to specialist technology and an environment where technical judgement and initiative are highly valued.
Main Duties and Responsibilities
* Diagnose, fault-find, repair, test, and commission electrical, electronic, and electromechanical systems.
* Ensure the safe operation of X-ray and gamma-based inspection equipment.
* Repair and calibrate instrumentation and control systems.
* Carry out planned preventative maintenance and routine servicing.
* Prepare risk assessments, reports, certificates, and technical documentation.
* Identify and report potential regulatory or compliance issues.
* Provide technical support to sales teams to ensure suitable solutions are specified.
* Contribute to continuous improvement by identifying process and technical enhancements.
* Attend customer sites as required and represent the business professionally.
* Support colleagues and other departments when needed.
* Assist in improving engineering procedures and operational workflows.

Essential Experience and Qualifications
* Degree (BEng) in Electrical, Electronic, or related Engineering discipline, or HNC/HND with substantial relevant experience.
* Proven experience in industrial machinery maintenance, installation, or commissioning.
* Experience with machinery control systems.
* Working knowledge of PLC-based systems, including software diagnostics.
* Competence in cable installation, termination, and panel wiring.
* Experience dismantling, cleaning, and reassembling mechanical assemblies.
* Ability to fault-find to component and PCB level.
* Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings and electrical schematics.
* Familiarity with industrial software packages and communication devices.
* Strong IT skills, including Microsoft Word and Excel.
* Relevant engineering apprenticeship or vocational training.
* Full UK manual driving licence.
* Ability to obtain security clearance.
* Ability to provide a continuous five-year employment history with no unexplained gaps exceeding 28 days.
Desirable Skills
* Functional safety knowledge and experience.
* Soldering and board-level diagnostics.
* Electrical installation and/or inspection and testing qualifications.
* Mechanical fitting or broader multi-disciplinary engineering experience.
