About Protea

Protea is a UK manufacturer and gas analysis solutions provider with more than 20 years’ experience. Its innovative technologies support emissions, process and environmental monitoring across industry and research worldwide.

Joining Protea means becoming part of an experienced team developing advanced solutions that support pollution reduction, process improvement and environmental responsibility.

About the role

Protea is looking for a practical, experienced Field Service Engineer to service, maintain, commission and troubleshoot its emissions gas analysers and associated monitoring systems.

You will work predominantly at customer sites across the UK and overseas, including industrial installations and vessels. Factory-based service, repair and technical support at Peterborough will also form an important part of the role.

You will work independently to diagnose faults, validate analyser performance and help customers keep their equipment operating reliably. This is an opportunity to take ownership of varied technical challenges and develop specialist expertise in Protea’s analyser technology and complete emissions monitoring systems.

Key responsibilities

Working at customer sites and alongside Protea’s technical teams, you will:

Service, maintain, calibrate and repair gas analysers and emissions monitoring systems.

Undertake UK and overseas service assignments, including marine applications.

Inspect, diagnose, repair and calibrate returned equipment at Peterborough.

Commission equipment and complete Site Acceptance Testing and performance checks.

Troubleshoot instrumentation, electrical, sampling-system and software faults.

Use certified calibration gases to validate analyser performance, safely handling gas cylinders, regulators and gas delivery components.

Inspect and troubleshoot sampling systems, including pumps, heated lines, filters, valves and tubing.

Support associated dust, particulate and stack flow measurement equipment where required.

Provide remote technical support and practical guidance to customers and distributors.

Complete accurate service reports, calibration records and follow-up recommendations.

Follow customer site requirements, risk assessments, method statements and Protea’s safety procedures.

Share recurring field issues and improvement opportunities with engineering, manufacturing and support colleagues.

What we’re looking for

Hands-on experience servicing, maintaining, commissioning or repairing gas analysers or emissions monitoring instrumentation.

Practical knowledge of analyser calibration and validation using certified gases.

Experience safely handling gas cylinders, pressure regulators and gas delivery systems.

Strong fault-finding skills across instrumentation, electrical or electronic equipment and gas sampling systems.

Confidence using PCs and instrument software for configuration, diagnostics and service work.

The ability to read electrical drawings, schematics and technical documentation and use appropriate test equipment.

Experience working independently on industrial customer sites and following safe-working procedures.

Clear communication skills and the ability to explain technical findings and recommended actions to customers.

Flexibility to travel within the UK and overseas, including assignments shaped by customer or vessel schedules.

A full UK driving licence.

Direct experience with Continuous Emissions Monitoring Systems (CEMS) is strongly preferred.

Experience with NDIR, FTIR, UV, FID or laser-based analysers, dust or particulate monitoring, stack flow measurement, marine or offshore service work, industrial sampling systems, or SAT/FAT would also be beneficial.

Working arrangements

The role combines customer-site assignments across the UK and overseas with factory service and technical support at Peterborough. Living within practical commuting distance of Peterborough would be beneficial, but not essential.

Training at Protea’s Middlewich office will be required during the first six months.

About you

You will be a methodical, organised engineer who enjoys solving technical problems and taking them through to resolution. You will be confident planning site work, managing tools and spares, completing documentation and representing Protea professionally with customers.

What’s in it for you?

A salary of £45,000–£49,000, depending on experience.

A company vehicle.

25 days’ holiday.

Overseas travel allowances.

Perkbox.

Cycle to Work scheme.

Electric Car Scheme and on-site charging.

Training and the opportunity to develop specialist expertise in emissions monitoring.

Varied work across industrial and marine environments.

Close collaboration with experienced engineering and technical colleagues.
