Job Purpose
We are looking for an experienced and customer-focused Field Service Engineer to support customers across Birmingham and the surrounding area.
Based from the Minworth depot, you will be responsible for carrying out servicing, maintenance, fault diagnosis and repairs on a range of materials handling equipment at customer sites.
The role requires someone who can work independently in the field, provide a high standard of technical support and ensure equipment is maintained safely, efficiently and with minimum disruption to the customer.
Key Responsibilities
- Carry out planned preventative maintenance and routine servicing on materials handling equipment.
- Diagnose mechanical, electrical and hydraulic faults and complete repairs efficiently.
- Attend customer breakdowns and work to minimise equipment downtime.
- Complete repairs and component replacements to the required standard.
- Carry out safety checks and identify any additional work required.
- Accurately complete service reports, job sheets and associated documentation.
- Identify parts required for repairs and liaise with the parts team to ensure they are ordered promptly.
- Manage van stock and ensure commonly required parts and equipment are maintained appropriately.
- Maintain tools, test equipment and company equipment in good working order.
- Communicate clearly with customers regarding equipment condition, repairs and any further work required.
- Work closely with the service team, parts department and other engineers to provide an efficient service to customers.
- Follow all relevant health & safety procedures and safe working practices.
- Represent the business professionally while working at customer sites.
- Carry out any other reasonable duties within the scope of the position.
What We’re Looking For
The successful candidate will ideally have previous experience working as a Field Service Engineer, Forklift Engineer, Plant Engineer, Agricultural Engineer, HGV Technician or similar mechanical/electrical engineering role.
You should have:
- Strong mechanical fault-finding and repair skills.
- A good understanding of electrical and hydraulic systems.
- Experience servicing and repairing mobile equipment or machinery.
- The ability to diagnose faults methodically and work independently.
- Good communication and customer service skills.
- A practical, organised and professional approach.
- Good attention to detail when completing service documentation.
- The ability to manage your own workload and respond effectively to changing priorities.
- A full UK driving licence.
Previous experience with forklift trucks or other materials handling equipment would be advantageous, although candidates from closely related engineering backgrounds may also be considered.
The Role
This is a field-based position, with the engineer operating from the Minworth, Birmingham B76 depot and travelling to customer sites across the surrounding territory.
You will have responsibility for your own customer visits and workload, while being supported by the wider service and parts teams.
The position would suit an engineer who enjoys the independence of working in the field but also values being part of an established engineering and service operation.
