Job Description:
Graduate Teaching Assistant - Romford
Are you a recent graduate looking to start a career in education and make a genuine impact in a classroom every day? A welcoming and inclusive secondary school in Romford is seeking a Graduate Teaching Assistant who is enthusiastic, reliable, and keen to support young people in their learning journey.
This is not a "sit at the back and observe" type of role-you'll be actively involved in school life from day one. You'll work closely with teachers, support students across a range of subjects, and help create a learning environment where every young person feels supported and able to succeed.
About the Role
As a Graduate Teaching Assistant, you'll play a key part in helping students access the curriculum and build confidence in their learning. Your day-to-day responsibilities will include:
- Supporting classroom teachers during lessons across different subjects
- Working with small groups of students to reinforce learning and boost progress
- Providing targeted 1:1 support for pupils who need additional help, including those with SEN or EAL needs
- Helping to prepare learning materials and classroom resources
- Encouraging positive behaviour and helping maintain a calm, structured learning environment
- Building supportive relationships with students to help improve engagement and confidence
- Contributing to wider school life, including enrichment activities, clubs, or intervention sessions
What the School is Looking For
The school is open-minded and values personality just as much as experience. They're looking for someone who:
- Holds a degree in any subject (education or psychology-related degrees are a bonus but not required)
- Has a genuine interest in working with young people and supporting their development
- Communicates clearly and confidently with both students and staff
- Is patient, adaptable, and able to stay calm under pressure
- Brings a positive, can-do attitude to the classroom
- Is reliable, punctual, and eager to learn from experienced educators
Previous school experience is helpful but not essential-this role is designed to develop your skills on the job.
What You'll Gain
This role is an excellent stepping stone into teaching, educational psychology, or youth work. You'll benefit from:
- Full immersion in a supportive secondary school environment
- Regular guidance and mentoring from experienced teachers and senior leaders
- First-hand experience of lesson delivery, behaviour management, and curriculum support
- Opportunities to work with a variety of year groups and abilities
- Valuable experience that strengthens applications for teacher training (PGCE, SCITT, School Direct, etc.)
- The chance to make a real difference in students' academic progress and confidence
Why This School?
The school in Romford prides itself on being warm, inclusive, and community-focused. Staff work closely together, and new graduates are fully supported rather than thrown in at the deep end. You'll be joining a team that genuinely values collaboration, development, and student wellbeing.
