Job Description:
We are recruiting a Health, Safety & Security Advisor to join an established specialist chemical manufacturing site in Stoke-on-Trent.
This is a hands-on, site-based position ideally suited to someone who enjoys being visible within an operational environment, working closely with employees, engineers, managers and contractors to ensure work is carried out safely and effectively.
Working alongside the Health, Safety & Security Manager, you will provide practical H&S advice across the site while supporting the continued development of safety systems, standards and culture.
The Role
Your responsibilities will include:
- Providing practical health and safety advice to managers, supervisors and employees.
- Conducting site inspections, audits and safety walkarounds.
- Supporting risk assessments, COSHH assessments and safe systems of work.
- Providing guidance around chemical and hazardous substance safety, machinery, workplace transport, work at height, confined spaces and contractor activities.
- Supporting the management of process and operational safety risks within a chemical manufacturing environment.
- Investigating accidents, incidents and near misses and helping implement corrective actions.
- Supporting emergency preparedness, drills and response procedures.
- Delivering and coordinating inductions, toolbox talks and safety awareness activities.
- Supporting regulatory compliance and interactions with bodies such as the HSE.
- Supporting major-hazard and COMAH-related safety arrangements.
- Coordinating aspects of site security including access control, contractors, visitors, CCTV and physical security.
- Participating in a structured Duty Manager rota following appropriate training.
About You
We are particularly interested in candidates with experience in chemical, process or other hazardous manufacturing environments.
Ideally, you will have:
- Previous experience within a Health & Safety/HSE position.
- Good knowledge of UK health and safety legislation.
- Experience with risk assessments, audits, inspections and incident investigations.
- Practical knowledge of COSHH and hazardous chemical management.
- The confidence to challenge unsafe practices while maintaining strong working relationships.
- Strong communication skills and the ability to engage with everyone from shop-floor operators through to senior management.
- A practical, solutions-focused approach to health and safety.
- Experience within a COMAH or major-hazard environment would be particularly advantageous.
- Knowledge or experience of DSEAR, PUWER, LOLER, permit-to-work systems, contractor safety, occupational hygiene, ISO 45001 and root cause analysis would also be beneficial, although training and development can be provided.
- Qualifications such as the NEBOSH General Certificate/Diploma, NVQ Level 6 or equivalent would be advantageous.
