IT Apprentice – Level 3 Information Communication Technician
Location: Barnsley, South Yorkshire – S75
Hours: 37.5 hours per week
Apprenticeship: Level 3 Information Communication Technician
Salary: £18000 – £20000 per annum
Kestrel Talent is supporting a growing technology business in Barnsley with the appointment of an IT Apprentice.
This is an excellent opportunity for someone with a genuine interest in technology to start their career in IT, gaining hands-on experience across technical support, cloud systems, cyber security, networking and automation.
You don’t need commercial IT experience. What matters most is your attitude, problem-solving ability and willingness to learn.
Maybe you've built or upgraded a PC, experimented with coding, set up a home network, played around with smart-home technology or you're simply the person friends and family turn to when something stops working.
If that sounds familiar, this could be the opportunity to turn your interest in technology into a career.
The Opportunity
You'll join a small, friendly and experienced IT team supporting small and medium-sized businesses.
Working within an MSP environment means you'll be exposed to a broad range of technologies rather than focusing on just one area of IT.
Depending on the systems used by each customer, you'll have the opportunity to gain exposure to:
Microsoft 365, Teams, SharePoint and OneDrive
Microsoft Entra ID, Intune and device management
Microsoft Azure and cloud services
Windows 11 and endpoint management
Networking, Wi-Fi, firewalls and VPNs
Cyber security, MFA and endpoint protection
Backup, recovery and remote monitoring tools
PowerShell, scripting, Power Automate, APIs and automation
AI-enabled productivity and automation tools
What You'll Be Doing
Working alongside experienced members of the IT Support Team, you'll gradually learn how to:
Respond to customer support requests and manage service desk tickets
Troubleshoot Windows, Microsoft 365, hardware and software issues
Support user accounts, permissions, passwords and MFA
Set up and configure laptops, desktops and other devices
Diagnose network, Wi-Fi and connectivity problems
Install and configure hardware, software and peripheral devices
Monitor customer systems and assist with security, backup and recovery
Visit customer sites for technical support and equipment installations
Document fixes, configurations and technical processes
Escalate more complex issues to senior engineers
Help customers understand and use their technology effectively
Get involved in scripting, automation and process improvement as your skills develop
Automation & Emerging Technology
A particularly interesting part of the role is the company's focus on using technology to make businesses more efficient.
You'll have the opportunity to learn how tools such as PowerShell, Power Automate, APIs, integrations and modern AI tools can be used to automate repetitive tasks and connect different business systems.
For someone interested in both traditional IT support and how technology is evolving, this provides an excellent environment in which to develop.
Who Are We Looking For?
We're much more interested in your potential and genuine interest in technology than an impressive CV.
You may have built or repaired PCs, experimented with coding, created a home network, used Raspberry Pi or smart-home technology, played around with automation or simply spent hours troubleshooting something because you wanted to understand how it worked.
You don't need to have done all of these things.
We're looking for someone who is:
Genuinely interested in computers and technology
Curious, logical and keen to learn
Friendly and confident when communicating with customers
Patient when helping people who aren't technically minded
A good team player who can also take responsibility for their own tasks
Adaptable, self-motivated and interested in new technology
Qualifications
You'll need 5 GCSEs at grades 9–4 (A–C) or equivalent*, including English Language and Maths.
Your Apprenticeship
You'll work towards the Level 3 Information Communication Technician Apprenticeship, combining structured training with practical, real-world experience.
Your development will include IT support, networking, cloud technologies, cyber security, troubleshooting, hardware and software, digital communications, customer support and infrastructure.
There may also be opportunities to work towards additional vendor-specific or professional certifications as your career develops.
Where Could It Lead?
This is much more than an opportunity to gain an IT qualification.
You'll be joining a growing technology business where you'll develop practical skills across IT support, cloud, cyber security, networking and automation.
For the right person, there is the opportunity to progress into a permanent IT position following successful completion of the apprenticeship, with future career routes potentially including IT Support, Cloud, Infrastructure, Cyber Security or Automation.
If you're constantly playing around with technology, solving computer problems or wondering how things work, we'd love to hear from you.
