Job Title: Mechanical Design Engineer
Location: York Area, North Yorkshire
Reporting to: Senior Engineer
Salary: £38K
Nicholas Associates has an excellent opportunity for a Mechanical Design Engineer, to join an established client in the York area.
Purpose of the Role:
You will be responsible for ensuring mechanical designs fully meet customer requirements (with any exceptions documented), while providing accurate manufacturing information for efficient and effective production.
Key Areas of Responsibility:
- Produce mechanical designs, 3D models, specifications and detailed drawings for components, sub-assemblies, and top-level assemblies using CAD (e.g., Solidworks)
- Prepare supporting documentation, including BOMs, routing cards, and process instructions. Update existing documentation / use change management (ECR system)
- Provide evidence of design verification and product validation via project Statements of Compliance.
- Conduct tolerance analysis, risk assessments and mitigation activities through project FMEA statements.
- Support prototype build, testing and validation activities.
- Ensure compliance with internal procedures for New Product Development, Change Control, and Configuration Management, demonstrating adherence during audits by QA, customers, or accreditation bodies.
- Ensure repeat business orders have appropriate documentation for efficient manufacture.
- Liaise with subcontractors for key processes on NPD projects to ensure design for manufacture and assembly best practise.
- Engage with customers to resolve technical issues and support new business opportunities.
- Provide pre-sales technical assistance, after-sales support, and technical input as required.
- Work in compliance with relevant quality, safety and regulatory requirements.
You will have:
- A minimum of 2-3 years Mechanical Design experience
- Proficiency in SolidWorks or similar 3D design software
- Manufacturing experience, a good understanding of materials, manufacturing processes and mechanical principles
- Knowledge of design principles for manufacture and process limitations
- Understanding of environmental conditions (temperature, humidity, shock, vibration, galvanic action) and their impact on design
- Project management exposure
- Aerospace and/or Defence sector experience
- Experience working in multidisciplinary engineering teams
- NPI process - Knowledge of APQP principles
