Mechanical Maintenance Engineer
Salary: £42,000 basic salary + £4,000 standby allowance (£46,000 package) + overtime
Location: Barnoldswick, Lancashire
Job Type: Full-time, Permanent
Working Pattern: Days + alternate weekend standby
About the Role
We are looking for an experienced Mechanical Maintenance Engineer to join our client's Engineering team.
This is a hands-on, predominantly mechanical maintenance role, responsible for keeping production equipment operating safely, efficiently and reliably. You will play an important part in reducing downtime, improving equipment performance and supporting continuous improvement across the site.
The role would suit a skilled mechanical maintenance engineer who enjoys fault finding, problem solving and working in a fast-paced manufacturing environment.
Key Responsibilities
- Carry out effective reactive mechanical maintenance to minimise production downtime.
- Diagnose mechanical faults accurately, identify root causes and complete repairs effectively.
- Complete planned preventative maintenance (PPM) activities to the required standard and schedule.
- Record all maintenance activities accurately using the CMMS, including parts used, costs and corrective actions.
- Carry out mechanical refurbishments, installations, modifications and equipment improvements.
- Identify opportunities to improve plant reliability, machine productivity, quality and waste reduction.
- Contribute to preventative and predictive maintenance strategies to improve asset reliability and availability.
- Identify and deliver small mechanical improvement projects that improve efficiency and reduce maintenance costs.
- Maintain production equipment to a high standard and ensure optimum equipment condition.
- Work closely with Production and Engineering colleagues to resolve issues and improve equipment performance.
- Ensure all work is completed in accordance with company health and safety procedures.
- Support the Engineering Department with additional hours when required.
The Equipment
You will work across a range of automated manufacturing equipment and mechanical systems, including:
- Conveyors
- Gearboxes
- Pumps
- Pneumatic systems
- Hydraulic systems
- Rotating equipment
- Automated production machinery
About You
To be successful in this role, you will ideally have:
- A recognised Mechanical Engineering Apprenticeship.
- HNC, BTEC or equivalent qualification in Mechanical Engineering.
- A minimum of 3 years' experience in mechanical maintenance, ideally within an automated manufacturing, FMCG or similar environment.
- Strong mechanical fault-finding and diagnostic skills.
- Good knowledge of mechanical systems including conveyors, gearboxes, pumps, pneumatics, hydraulics and rotating equipment.
- Experience working with a CMMSand maintenance planning systems.
- Knowledge of planned preventative, preventative and predictive maintenance techniques.
- A practical, hands-on approach to engineering and maintenance.
- A proactive approach to identifying and implementing improvements.

Working Pattern & Standby
This is a days-based position, with working hours rotating between:
- 7:00am - 3:00pm
- 10:00am - 6:00pm
You will also be required to provide alternate weekend standby cover.
The role offers a £4,000 annual standby allowance on top of the £42,000 basic salary, giving a total package of £46,000 before overtime and call-out payments.
When on standby, you do not necessarily need to be on site but must be available to respond if required.
If called out, overtime is paid at 1.5x, with an additional £50 call-out payment and a minimum of 2 hours' pay.
