Chris Casey, Divisional Commander, London and South East England

Protect Every Journey. Make a Difference Every Day.

Every day, millions of people rely on Britain's railway network. As a Police Officer with British Transport Police, you'll help keep passengers safe, protect vulnerable people, prevent crime and keep the country moving.

From major railway stations and transport hubs to sporting events, concerts and city centres, you'll work in some of London's busiest and most recognisable locations. No two days are ever the same.

One day you could be safeguarding a vulnerable child. The next, responding to an emergency, supporting a victim, investigating crime or helping manage a major incident.

This is a career where your actions genuinely matter. Every interaction is an opportunity to make a positive difference.

Police Constable Entry Programme (PCEP)

Successful candidates will join the Police Constable Entry Programme (PCEP), British Transport Police's non-degree entry route for Police Officers.

You'll be employed as a Police Officer and paid from day one whilst completing fully funded training.

From April 2027, the initial training programme will last approximately 33 weeks. Training combines classroom learning, online study, scenario-based exercises and practical operational policing experience.

Supported by experienced trainers, tutors and supervisors, you'll develop the skills and confidence required to respond to incidents and emergencies, investigate crime, protect vulnerable people, support victims and witnesses, and use police powers lawfully and effectively.

Why Join British Transport Police?

British Transport Police offers a unique policing career protecting millions of passengers across the rail network every day. You'll work in iconic locations across London, experience a wide variety of incidents and investigations, and play a vital role in keeping the travelling public safe.

The role provides excellent opportunities for development, progression and specialisation while working alongside supportive and experienced colleagues who are committed to helping you succeed.

Career Changers Welcome

You do not need previous policing experience to apply.

We welcome applications from people from all backgrounds and industries. Many of our officers previously worked in retail, hospitality, customer service, healthcare, transport, education, security, HM Forces and the emergency services.

We're looking for people with strong communication skills, sound judgement, emotional resilience, empathy, the ability to remain calm under pressure, strong teamwork skills and a genuine commitment to public service.

Salary and Benefits

You'll receive a starting salary of £33,609 plus Inner London allowances of £9,044.75, giving total earnings of more than £42,600 from day one. Your salary will increase throughout your service and reaches £52,014 after five years.

Additional benefits include free Oyster Card travel for both personal and duty journeys across London, 25 days annual leave increasing with service, a competitive CARE pension scheme, Blue Light Card eligibility, retail discounts, free eyesight tests, Police Federation membership, occupational health and wellbeing support, enhanced family-friendly leave provisions and ongoing learning and development opportunities.

Career Development

A career as a Police Officer is only the beginning. As your experience develops, opportunities may become available within specialist areas including Criminal Investigation Department (CID), Counter Terrorism, County Lines and Serious Organised Crime, Safeguarding, Intelligence, Public Order, Neighbourhood Policing, Firearms and Specialist Operations.

Clear promotion opportunities are available throughout your career, allowing you to progress into supervisory and leadership positions.
