Principal Systems Engineer

Alstom is the UK & Ireland’s leading supplier of new trains and train services, and a leading signalling and rail infrastructure provider. Alstom have built, or are building, just under 40% of the UK mainline train fleet; as well as the entire fleets in service with London Underground and Dublin Luas.

Employing 6000 people, we design and build trains at Derby, the UK’s largest train factory; and operate major sites at Widnes, Crewe, Ilford and Plymouth, and 30 train services depots across the UK and Ireland.
Your Future Role:
The succesful candidate will participate in the development, adaptation, introduction and systems delivery elements of SSI and SMARTLOCK systems and processes (SML 400, MooN, Smart Gateway, SmartIO, Support System, Test Environment, AutoTesting) for signalling systems in the UK and Ireland.They will also engage in the development and / or improvement of tools and processes within the business including requirements capture, planning, specifications, design, implementation, testing and roll out. Assist in ensuringthat tools and processes remain fit for purpose and enable continuous improvement of them by leading regular reviews and proactively suggesting and implementing improvements.
We’ll look to you for:
• Ensuring the delivery of standardised objectives and optimum system solutions on allocated projects
• Delivering project solutions with a strong focus on reliability, maintainability, and safety principles
• Ensuring conformity with systems standards, agreed system architecture, client standards, and company procedures
• Participating in the development of new systems solutions
• Supporting safety assurance through the application of Common Safety Methods (CSM) on allocated projects/products
• Providing systems input to tenders and participating in systems integration and validation of technical documentation
• Managing technical teams for Systems Engineers
• Providing second-line product support to customers in the field

• MSc or BSc-level education in an engineering-related subject, preferably control systems, electrical engineering, or systems engineering (or equivalent)
• Experience or understanding of systems engineering management
• Knowledge of UK railway safety approval processes and client/system standards
• Familiarity with software development or scripting
• A Personal Track Safety (PTS) certification (desirable)
• Commercial and financial awareness (desirable)
• Experience working in a railway systems engineering environment
