Caretaker / Premises Manager - Catholic Primary School

St Albans, Hertfordshire | £26,847 PA | 30 Hours Per Week

Tradewind Recruitment is working with a welcoming Catholic primary school in St Albans to recruit a reliable, practical and proactive Premises Manager. This is an excellent opportunity for someone with strong DIY and maintenance skills who takes pride in maintaining a safe, clean and well-presented school environment.

Working closely with the Headteacher and wider school team, you will take responsibility for the day-to-day maintenance, security and upkeep of the school premises, ensuring both the internal and external areas remain safe, secure and fully operational.

The Role - Key Responsibilities

• Open and secure the school site each day, managing gates, alarms and security systems.
• Complete daily site inspections, identifying potential health and safety issues.
• Carry out general maintenance, minor repairs, basic plumbing and carpentry.
• Undertake decorating, refurbishment and general DIY tasks as required.
• Maintain outdoor areas, including clearing paths, leaves and general debris.
• Monitor fire safety procedures, complete routine testing and maintain compliance records.
• Oversee cleaning standards, waste disposal and the replenishment of essential supplies.
• Assist with setting up rooms, furniture and equipment for school activities and events.
• Receive deliveries and support the movement of equipment and supplies between school buildings.
• Liaise with contractors and external maintenance providers, reporting any issues requiring specialist attention.

The Ideal Candidate

The school is looking for someone who is hands-on, dependable and able to work independently, using their initiative to prioritise daily tasks.

You should have:

• Previous experience in premises management, caretaking, facilities or general maintenance.
• Practical DIY skills, including basic plumbing, carpentry and minor repairs.
• The ability to identify and respond to health and safety issues.
• Good organisational skills and the ability to manage competing priorities.
• A flexible, proactive approach and excellent timekeeping.
• A commitment to safeguarding and supporting the Catholic ethos of the school.

Previous experience working within a school or similar setting would be advantageous, although candidates with relevant practical maintenance experience will also be considered.

• Salary: £26,847 per annum
• Location: St Albans, Hertfordshire
• Hours: 30 hours per week
• Contract: 52 weeks per year
• Grade: H3, Point 6
• Reporting to: Headteacher
