Senior Highways Engineer
We are looking for an experienced Senior Highways Engineer to join a growing highways engineering team in London.
This is a strong opportunity for someone with around 6-9 years' experience who wants to take an active role in delivering projects, supporting clients and helping to develop an expanding highways capability.
The team works collaboratively, with engineers, planners and technicians sharing ideas, technical knowledge and experience to achieve the best outcomes for clients. You will work across a varied portfolio of projects and sectors, primarily within the private sector, supporting clients including high-profile developers, landowners, housebuilders, retailers, universities, NHS healthcare providers and contractors.
The role would suit someone who enjoys taking ownership of their work, contributing to project delivery and seeing tangible results from the projects they support.
The Role
Depending on your experience, your responsibilities will include:
·Applying relevant highway design guidance including DMRB, Manual for Streets 1 & 2 and LTN 1/20, as well as local authority highway design standards;
·Using engineering software independently, including AutoCAD, Civil 3D, AutoTrack and MicroDrainage;
·Preparing highway engineering drawings, calculations, technical reports and design documentation;
·Supporting and managing the design of development-related highway schemes;
·Understanding and applying the Section 278 and Section 38 agreement processes;
·Reviewing utility diversions associated with Section 278 works, including an understanding of National Joint Utilities Group guidance and C2/C3 utility information;
·Identifying and supporting applications for Departures from Standard with Local Highway Authorities and National Highways;
·Applying designers' duties under the Construction (Design and Management) Regulations 2015;
·Coordinating with transport planners, project engineers and engineering technicians to ensure comprehensive project delivery;
·Supporting project management activities and maintaining effective communication with clients and stakeholders;
·Preparing client briefs, scopes of work and fee proposals;
·Contributing to company-wide bids, tenders and framework applications;
·Commissioning, preparing and responding to technical studies including optioneering studies, GG104 risk assessments, GG142 walking, cycling and horse-riding assessments, and GG119 road safety audits; and
·Contributing to wider commercial and business targets.
The Candidate
The successful candidate is likely to have:
·Around 6-9 years' experience in highways or civil engineering;
·A relevant qualification in Civil Engineering or equivalent practical experience within highway engineering;
·Experience in development-focused highway design and engineering;
·Strong working knowledge of relevant UK highway design standards and guidance;
·Experience using AutoCAD and ideally Civil 3D, AutoTrack and MicroDrainage;
·Membership of, or a desire to work towards membership of, a relevant professional body such as ICE or CIHT;
·Strong written and verbal communication skills;
·Experience working with clients, local authorities and multidisciplinary project teams;
·Excellent attention to detail and a consistently high standard of work; and
·The ability to work proactively, manage priorities and use initiative.
