Job Description:

Senior Mechanical Design Engineer

South Elmsall | £57,000–£60,000 | Permanent | Engineering / Automation / Power Transmission / Bespoke Machinery

A global engineering organisation is seeking an experienced Senior Mechanical Design Engineer to take a leading technical role across automation systems, power transmission equipment and custom-engineered solutions.

This is a role with real weight to it. You’ll be managing multiple design phases at once, owning key project components and playing an active part in shaping the technical direction of the wider engineering team. There’s no formal line management, but task assignment, design planning, peer support and junior mentoring are all part of the job — so strong leadership qualities and a genuinely collaborative approach are essential.

The Role

• Technical Innovation — Leading the charge on new methods, process improvements and better documentation across automation, power transmission and bespoke mechanical systems, serving as the go-to expert when technical challenges arise

• Project Ownership — Taking full responsibility for major project components or standalone projects, delivering to technical, schedule and budget requirements

• Advanced Problem Solving — Resolving complex engineering challenges by drawing on deep technical knowledge and extensive hands-on mechanical design experience

• Bid & Proposal Support — Providing expert technical input to bids, including risk assessment, concept development, cost estimation and initial planning

• Design Lifecycle Delivery — Managing the full design process from concept through to detailed design, covering modelling, calculations, design reviews, production drawings and BOM creation

• Engineering Calculations — Performing and reviewing calculations using manual methods, spreadsheets, FEA and specialist software

• Client & Site Interaction — Attending client meetings, supporting site surveys, handling technical queries and contributing to installation, testing and commissioning activity

• Production Support — Supporting production teams with technical queries, red-line updates, inspections and Factory Acceptance Testing

• Legacy Equipment Support — Providing ongoing engineering support for existing and previously delivered equipment and systems

• Team Mentoring — Mentoring and guiding colleagues, supporting their professional development and contributing to a positive, high-performing engineering culture

• Quality & Safety — Ensuring all work consistently meets safety standards, quality requirements and engineering best practice

• Stakeholder Engagement — Building strong, trusted relationships with clients, suppliers, contractors and internal teams, always representing the business professionally

• Leadership Contribution — Chairing project meetings, presenting design concepts and making sure colleagues feel involved and valued in key decisions

What We’re Looking For

• Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, or equivalent experience

• Strong 3D CAD capability — AutoCAD or Inventor preferred

• Background in automated machinery, power transmission systems or bespoke mechanical equipment

• A genuine commitment to CPD and active involvement with industry bodies, seminars and technical events

• Solid grasp of advanced engineering principles, with the ability to work confidently with minimal supervision

• Strong communication, organisational and problem-solving skills

What’s on Offer

• £57,000–£60,000 salary

• Ownership of high-impact engineering projects across automation and bespoke mechanical systems

• Genuine influence over design standards and technical direction within a global organisation

• A collaborative culture built around innovation and continuous improvement

• Varied engineering challenges spanning multiple sectors

A permanent opportunity for a senior engineer who’s ready to lead from the front — with the projects, platform and people around them to make a lasting impact.
