Job Description:
Senior Mechanical Engineer - Electromechanical Systems
Location: Stone, Staffordshire
Salary: Up to £65,000 per annum
Working hours: Monday-Friday, 9:00am-5:00pm (37.5 hours per week)
Working arrangement: Fully onsite
The Opportunity
Are you an experienced Mechanical Engineer with a strong background in rotating machinery, motor-driven equipment and mechanical design?
We're working with a global engineering and scientific equipment manufacturer to recruit a Senior Mechanical Engineer to join its multidisciplinary engineering team at its Stone facility.
This is an exciting opportunity to play a key role in a major manufacturing transfer project, bringing established products and manufacturing operations from the United States to the UK. You'll take ownership of existing equipment, resolve technical challenges as production ramps up and contribute to future product development.
Although you'll be part of a large international business with a diverse product portfolio, you'll join a relatively small engineering team where your technical expertise and input can make a genuine difference.
The Role
As Senior Mechanical Engineer, you'll take responsibility for supporting the transfer, manufacture and ongoing development of a range of specialist laboratory and industrial equipment.
Working closely with colleagues in the UK and overseas, you'll help ensure a smooth transition of manufacturing operations while driving engineering improvements and supporting production.
Key responsibilities will include:
- Supporting the transfer of manufacturing operations and equipment from the US to the UK, including knowledge transfer with the existing engineering team.
- Taking ownership of established products and resolving technical and manufacturing issues as production is introduced at the UK facility.
- Supporting the introduction of new suppliers, including First Article Inspection (FAI), component qualification and supplier validation.
- Undertaking mechanical design and development using SolidWorks, including 3D modelling, assemblies and manufacturing drawings.
- Troubleshooting rotating machinery, bearings, shafts, couplings, motors, variable frequency drives (VFDs) and reciprocating mechanisms.
- Conducting root-cause analysis, testing, prototyping and design modifications to improve equipment performance and reliability.
- Supporting equipment incorporating low-power benchtop systems, three-phase motors, hydraulic presses and cryogenic sample preparation machinery.
- Working closely with production teams to investigate technical issues and minimise manufacturing disruption.
- Collaborating with international engineering colleagues across mechanical, electrical and controls disciplines.
- Contributing to longer-term new product development, sustaining engineering and continuous improvement initiatives.
About You
You'll be a hands-on, technically capable Mechanical Engineer who enjoys understanding how equipment works, solving complex mechanical problems and taking designs through to practical application.
You'll be comfortable working across disciplines, investigating root causes and working collaboratively with manufacturing and engineering colleagues.
Essential skills and experience
- Strong mechanical design and development experience, ideally within industrial machinery, equipment manufacturing or a similar engineering environment.
- Proven experience with rotating machinery.
- Experience working with three-phase motors.
- Practical knowledge of variable frequency drives (VFDs), including specification, selection and configuration.
- Strong SolidWorks skills, covering 3D modelling, assemblies and engineering drawings.
- Good understanding of bearings, shafts, couplings, belts, pulleys and mechanical power transmission.
- Experience in hands-on mechanical troubleshooting, testing and root-cause analysis.
- Ability to work across mechanical, electrical and controls-related engineering challenges.
- A curious, inquisitive and methodical approach, with the ability to get to the root of technical problems.
Desirable experience
Experience in any of the following areas would be advantageous:
- Laboratory, scientific or specialist industrial equipment.
- Sample preparation machinery, including grinders, mills and shakers.
- Cryogenic systems and liquid nitrogen equipment.
- Hydraulic presses and high-force mechanical systems.
- Manufacturing transfers, First Article Inspection and supplier qualification.
- Vibration analysis, fatigue assessment, finite element analysis (FEA) and geometric dimensioning and tolerancing (GD&T).
- New product development, product improvement and sustaining engineering.
Interested?
If you're a Mechanical Engineer with strong rotating machinery, three-phase motor and VFD experience, and you're looking for a role combining hands-on engineering, manufacturing support and future product development, we'd be keen to hear from you.
