Senior Substation Primary (HV Plant) Design Engineer

Epsom, Birmingham, Leeds or Glasgow – 12 months (Inside IR35)

The Opportunity

We are seeking an experienced Senior Substation Primary (HV Plant) Design Engineer to support the delivery of major Transmission & Distribution projects across the UK energy sector.

This is an exciting opportunity to work on high-profile infrastructure programmes that contribute directly to the UK’s Net Zero ambitions. You will join a collaborative Power & Energy team delivering FEED and Detailed Design solutions for leading clients including National Grid, SSEN Transmission, and other UK and international utilities.

The role offers the opportunity to work across multi-disciplinary engineering projects while developing your technical expertise within a supportive consultancy environment.

Key Responsibilities

• Operate in a senior role within one of the Electrical Engineering teams based in Epsom, Birmingham, Leeds, or Glasgow
• Deliver technical leadership across FEED and Detailed Design workstreams
• Build strong and trusted relationships with clients and project stakeholders
• Interface directly with clients to understand requirements and develop successful project solutions
• Support the delivery of projects for National Grid, SSEN Transmission, and other T&D clients
• Ensure quality assurance across engineering studies, detailed designs, and tender submissions
• Support resource planning and mentoring within project teams
• Review and coordinate HV plant design activities including:
  • HV layouts and elevations
  • Maintenance access drawings
  • Earthing design and reports
  • Mechanical interlocking
  • HV busbar calculations
  • Technical specifications for HV plant equipment
• Act as Principal Designer Representative when required
• Coordinate with internal engineering teams, subcontractors, and suppliers
• Manage tender packages and contribute to technical submissions
• Lead and participate in Design Review and Hazard Review meetings
• Attend client and project site visits as required
• Support business development activities and identify client opportunities

Experience & Qualifications

Essential

• Experience in Electrical Engineering with a focus on HV Primary Plant / Substation Design
• Experience supporting FEED and Detailed Design projects
• Strong understanding of transmission and distribution systems

Desirable

• Experience delivering projects up to 400kV
• Previous experience working with National Grid, SSEN, or other utility clients
