Job Description:

An exciting opportunity has arisen for an experienced Drainage Engineer to come and join a busy client in the Manchester area.

The main duties of the experienced Drainage Engineer are:

• Lead highway drainage reactive maintenance and minor works programmes, supporting the delivery of annual highway maintenance objectives.
• Identify and resolve difficult-to-access locations where parked vehicles obstruct gully cleansing, drainage, street cleansing and reactive highway maintenance activities.
• Develop and deliver targeted maintenance programmes using Early Contractor Involvement (ECI) and coordinated stakeholder engagement.
• Coordinate multi-disciplinary teams including Highway Operations, Network Management, Waste & Cleansing Services, contractors, residents, community groups and elected Members.
• Plan and programme gully cleansing, drainage maintenance, street cleansing and associated highway works, ensuring resources and contractors are efficiently deployed.
• Coordinate temporary parking restrictions, traffic management, signage, communications and operational arrangements to facilitate safe access for maintenance activities.
• Undertake highway drainage engineering assessments, site inspections and investigations to identify defects, maintenance requirements and practical engineering solutions.
• Provide site supervision and contractor management, ensuring works are delivered safely, efficiently and in accordance with relevant specifications, standards and requirements.
• Monitor programme progress, risks, issues and dependencies, implementing corrective actions to maintain delivery against agreed objectives.
• Liaise with contractors and service providers to coordinate short-duration targeted maintenance programmes across multiple locations.
• Engage directly with residents, businesses, community groups and elected Members to communicate planned works, address concerns and secure support for temporary access arrangements.
• Prepare programme reports, performance information, business cases and management updates for senior stakeholders.
• Maintain accurate programme, asset and maintenance records using asset management systems such as Alloy, Causeway, Mayrise and similar platforms.
• Apply strong knowledge of highway construction methods, materials, drainage systems, specifications and maintenance practices to develop practical engineering solutions.
• Support road permitting and traffic management processes, including ParkMap, GMRAPS and associated highway network requirements.
• Identify opportunities to reduce recurring maintenance issues, improve operational processes and establish sustainable long-term access and maintenance arrangements.
• Undertake site inspections of highway and street lighting assets, recording asset condition and inspection data within relevant asset management systems.
• Support improvements to highway condition, drainage performance, customer satisfaction and the efficiency of reactive maintenance services.
• Manage competing priorities and multiple stakeholders while maintaining a flexible, collaborative and solution-focused approach.
• Undertake regular site visits and coordinate field-based activities, requiring a valid driving licence and access to a suitable vehicle.
• Apply professional civil/highway engineering knowledge supported by relevant degree, HNC/HND or professional engineering qualifications and substantial industry experience.
