Field Service Engineer - Telehandler & Roto Hire Specialist | East Midlands

Package: £38,000 + Vehicle + Overtime + 25 Days Annual Leave + Extensive Benefits Package

Location: East Midlands - field-based, covering customer sites across the region

Type: Full-time, permanent (40 hours per week - Door to Door)

The Opportunity

Plenty of field service roles have you chasing whatever lands in the van that day - a different make every visit, no manufacturer support, and a parts department that sees you as a nuisance. This one is different.

Our client is the specialist telehandler and roto hire division of one of the UK’s best-known equipment rental groups. They do one thing - telehandlers and rotating telehandlers - and they do it properly. Their engineers are trained by the biggest manufacturers in the industry, their service vans are profiled for telehandlers and rotos only, and they fully service and maintain their own fleet on site rather than leaning on the manufacturers to do it for them.

They’re looking for a skilled Field Service Engineer to look after their machines and customers across the East Midlands. About the Company

Our client is a nationally recognised specialist in telehandler and roto hire, part of a listed specialist equipment rental group whose heritage goes back to 1954 and which celebrated its 70th anniversary in 2024. The group turns over more than £350 million a year across a portfolio of specialist rental businesses serving infrastructure, construction, housebuilding, utilities and energy.

The division runs what it describes as the most diverse telehandler and roto fleet in the UK - from compact 4m telehandlers right up to 35m rotating machines, alongside 7.2 and 12 tonne heavy lift telehandlers, electric telehandlers and Teletruks. The fleet is built around the leading manufacturers, including JCB, Manitou and Merlo, so you’ll be working on modern, well-maintained machines rather than tired kit that’s been run into the ground.

A depot network stretching from Aberdeen to Penzance means there’s nowhere in the UK they can’t reach, and a centralised hire and service desk handles enquiries nationwide - giving engineers in the field real technical back-up over the phone when they need it. Customers range from national housebuilders and main contractors to infrastructure and utilities clients, and many have been working with the business for years.

Safety is taken seriously too. The group’s approach is built around getting everyone home safe and healthy, with third-party validation of how it manages risk, and it has had its net-zero targets validated by the Science Based Targets initiative - so you’ll see more electric and low-emission machines coming through the fleet.

The Role

As Field Service Engineer, you’ll be the face of the business on customer sites across the East Midlands - keeping hire machines working, getting broken-down machines back to work quickly, and making sure customers want to hire again.

You’ll plan and manage your own workload, work closely with the service desk and wider operations team, and take ownership of the machines and customers on your patch. Expect a mix of planned servicing, breakdowns and fault-finding across construction, housebuilding, infrastructure and utilities sites.

What you’ll be doing:

• Carrying out planned maintenance and servicing on hire telehandlers and rotos on customer sites
• Responding to breakdowns and delivering fast, effective repairs to keep customer downtime to a minimum
• Diagnosing and resolving mechanical, hydraulic and electrical faults on site
• Acting as the frontline representative for the business, building strong, lasting relationships with customers
• Working with the service desk and wider operations teams to spot and deliver improvements to the service
• Keeping accurate records of every repair, service and customer interaction
• Managing your own diary and time effectively across a busy regional patch

About You

• Proven experience repairing and servicing plant equipment, including telehandlers - essential
• A recognised mechanical qualification in plant or agricultural engineering (NVQ, City & Guilds or equivalent) - desirable
• Experience with rotating telehandlers, heavy lift machines or electric telehandlers is a bonus, but full training is provided
• A practical problem-solver who uses their initiative and is confident working on their own
• A good communicator with a genuine customer service mindset
• Well organised, with experience of managing your own time and workload
• Happy to travel to customer sites across the region as required
• A valid UK driving licence
