Payroll & HR Officer
Location: Stafford Park, Telford
Salary: £37,000 – £47,550 per annum, depending on experience
Hours: Monday to Friday, 39.5 hours per week
Proactive Personnel are recruiting for a Payroll & HR Officer to join an established manufacturing organisation based in Telford.
This is a varied position combining responsibility for the full payroll cycle with day-to-day HR administration. You will work closely with the HR Manager and play an important role in ensuring employees are paid accurately and on time, while maintaining high standards across HR records, documentation and compliance.
The successful candidate will be comfortable working in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment and will have previous experience managing UK payroll from start to finish.
Key Responsibilities:
Payroll:
- Manage weekly and monthly payroll processes for employees, including hourly paid and shift workers.
- Accurately process overtime, shift allowances, bonuses, timesheets and other variable pay elements.
- Maintain payroll records for new starters, leavers, salary changes and contractual amendments.
- Calculate and process statutory payments, including SSP, SMP and SPP.
- Ensure holiday pay is calculated correctly, including for employees with irregular or part-year working patterns.
- Prepare and submit RTI returns to HMRC.
- Administer PAYE, National Insurance, pension contributions and student loan deductions.
- Carry out regular payroll checks, reconciliations and year-end activities.
- Produce P60 documentation and assist with P11D-related requirements.
- Deal professionally and confidentially with employee payroll queries.
HR Administration:
- Keep employee information accurate and up to date across HR and payroll systems.
- Prepare employment contracts, amendments, letters and new starter documentation.
- Complete and maintain right-to-work documentation.
- Record and monitor employee absence and holiday information, highlighting relevant trends or trigger points.
- Provide administrative support for employee relations matters, including meeting notes and documentation.
- Assist with annual salary review processes and other HR projects.
- Help ensure HR and payroll procedures remain compliant with current UK legislation and GDPR requirements.
- Provide documentation and information for internal, external and customer audits when required.
About You:
We're looking for someone with solid practical experience in UK payroll, ideally gained within a manufacturing, engineering, production or other shift-based environment.
You'll ideally have:
- Demonstrable experience managing end-to-end UK payroll.
- Good understanding of PAYE, National Insurance and workplace pension requirements.
- Experience handling statutory payments and HMRC RTI submissions.
- Previous experience working with payroll software.
- Strong Excel skills, including the ability to use lookups and pivot tables.
- Excellent attention to detail and a high level of numerical accuracy.
- The ability to organise your workload and consistently meet payroll deadlines.
- A professional and confidential approach when dealing with sensitive employee information.
- GCSEs, or equivalent, in Maths and English.
A CIPP qualification, CIPD Level 3 qualification, or current study towards either would be advantageous, as would knowledge of UK employment legislation.
