Job Description:
Job Title: Project Engineer – Mechanical Design / Conveyors & Special Purpose Machinery
Location: Northamptonshire
Salary: £45,000 to £55,000 per annum
Job Type: Permanent, Full-time
About the Company
We are a market-leading engineering manufacturer specialising in the design, fabrication, and installation of heavy-duty special purpose machinery, automated conveyor systems, and turnkey recycling plant solutions. Due to sustained growth, we are looking for a skilled Project Engineer with strong SolidWorks and AutoCAD expertise to join our design and delivery team.
The Project Engineer Role
As a Project Engineer, you will bridge the gap between mechanical design and hands-on project delivery. You will own the engineering lifecycle of bespoke material handling and sorting systems from initial concept, through 3D SolidWorks modelling, sheet metal fabrication detailing, and BOM creation, right up to shop floor manufacturing, site installation, and final commissioning.
Key Responsibilities:
- Mechanical Layout Design: Use SolidWorks (3D) and AutoCAD (2D) to produce General Arrangement (GA) drawings, integrating in-house conveyors, screens, and structures with specialist third-party machinery.
- Manufacturing Detail: Create precision sheet metal and heavy fabrication drawings for direct release to the production shop floor.
- Project Management & Data: Manage project costs, build accurate Bills of Materials (BOMs), and maintain technical data within ERP/MRP systems.
- Client & Site Engineering: Attend customer sites to take precision measurements, liaise on technical requirements, and support the project through to design freeze and final sign-off.
- Commissioning Support: Collaborate with the manufacturing and installation teams to troubleshoot engineering issues during plant commissioning and testing.
Requirements & Core Skillset:
- Proven experience as a Project Engineer, Mechanical Design Engineer, or Applications Engineer working with special purpose machinery or conveyors / material handling equipment.
- High proficiency in SolidWorks (3D design and detailing) and AutoCAD (2D layout configuration).
- Strong background in sheet metal design, structural steel fabrication, or heavy mechanical engineering.
- Experience generating BOMs and using MRP/ERP software.
- Prior background in the recycling, waste management, quarrying, or bulk material handling sectors is highly advantageous.
- High initiative, excellent problem-solving skills, and a willingness to attend site when projects require.
What’s on Offer?
- Competitive base salary tailored to your experience.
- Permanent, stable role within an innovative engineering sector.
- Opportunity to see your engineering designs built from scratch on-site.
- Company pension, holiday allowance, and career development.
